I use digital illustration and Graphic design software to create our designs, this way we have scalable designs that can be used for a vast array of printed products and the print quality is always at the highest level. It also means that there is a creative process involved with each design and I get to choose which details that I want to appear on the final product (usually all of the detail to be honest).

Step 1 - Photo

I source our photos from our followers, friends & family members who want nothing better than to see their VW on a t-shirt. The photo is edited slightly to help with the contrast for illustration.

Step 2 - Lines

The bulk of the illustration work is line work, all of the lines are created one by one, in a contrasting colour (to see what has been done so far) and in the same thickness.

Some lines are modified along the way and some are deleted or redrawn depending on how they look on the final line drawing

Once this is done, there is now a framework in place to continue to the final stages.

Step 3 - Shadow

Whilst the line drawing itself is a great illustration, it needs some depth to really stand out. This is where I add a shadow layer behind the line, I have always found that the shadows on the glass look a little bulky, so often these parts are amended with some extra stroke lines to give a ‘reflective’ feel

Final Steps - Export & T-shirt Design

Once this is done I will make any final modifications with the photo layer removed (or hidden) with a plain background - this displays the final illustration as it would appear when printed.

I then use the design editor on Teemill to produce the final design for the t-shirt. Selecting a choice of t-shirt colours which contrast or compliment the chosen print colour.

Last but not least I add Volkswear Custom Apparel text, which, on the Signature range, can be removed or edited by our customers.

Author - Jamie - Volkswear Custom Apparel

We work with a UK-based partner called Teemill to print and fulfil our T-shirts.
